Gain appreciation for the time, work and effort involved in this process.
Doug has held a passion for fly fishing for the past 30 years. Over the past seven years, Doug has developed an interest in building bamboo fly rods in his home.
Building a split cane bamboo fly rod can be a very challenging and enjoyable hobby incorporating both wood working techniques and the skills of wrapping and finishing a fly rod. The basic steps include:
- Deciding the size and taper of the rod,
- Selecting and splitting the cane – nodes or nodeless,
- Straightening, bevelling and planning the taper,
- Binding and sanding the blanks,
- Grips and ferrules,
- Wrapping and finishing.
Doug will share with us the basic tools required, the materials needed and the construction process involved in building your very own fishable bamboo fly rod.
